About this collection

This collection, A Photographer’s Craft: Noel Fehm Photography, showcases the photographs and photograph-related artifacts that were part of the professional and creative craftsmanship of Noel Fehm. A self-made photographer, Fehm worked mainly in the environs of New Haven, Connecticut from the 1950s through early 1980s. He started out selling cameras and film while establishing himself as a professional photographer who developed, enlarged, mounted and framed his work from the basement of his home. He was particularly interested in aerial photography. There is significant educational, historical, cultural and artistic value in this multi-faceted collection. For students, researchers and the general public, it evokes not only the culture of the New Haven area at this time, but also enhances the study and appreciation of photography and the professional interests of a freelance photographer.
