About this collection

This collection consists of items found in the Lord Robert Bertie Papers, and objects associated with the collection. Lord Bertie's Papers are housed in the Berkshire Records Office in England. They contain five bundles totaling several hundred pages. The collection is comprised primarily of papers pertaining to Lord Bertie's finances. However, the collection is not nearly that boring.

Lord Robert Bertie was a member of the British Parliament before and during the American Revolution. He served as a Royal Governor in Ireland and England. Lord Bertie was also the Colonel of the 7th Regiment of Foot or Royal Fusiliers from 1756 to 1776. He was promoted to the Colonelcy of the 2nd Troop of Horse Guards in 1777 and served in that post until his death in 1781. The papers in this collection include Lord Bertie's personal correspondence and finances, as well as his military and political finances. Users will find purchase orders for military uniforms as well as Madeira and Parmesan cheese!
