About this collection

This project originated from the passing of my granny, Ruth Monteith Musgrave who died on 15 April 2014.  While cleaning out her possession, I discovered around 2,000 photographs, videos, objects and other artifacts from her long life.  Having been born in Swain County, NC in 1930 she as well as her immediate family were greatly affected by the decision of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Federal Works Project to construction the Fontana Dam with 11,000 underwater acres and 44,000 above water acres of land.

One of those effected were Sewell Monteith, Ruth and her five sisters.  This decision to sell his 200 acres for $3000 in 1943 led to their migration out of the mountains and to the piedmont region of North Carolina.  Along with their possessions they brought mountain norms with them including music, religion and food ways.  This collection will focus on the impact these action had and moments in her life’s journey.
