About this collection

This collection, the Roberts Bequest, contains papers relating to the use and administration of a scholarship fund created for the benefit of young men entering the ministry. A High Point business man, Mr. J.C. Roberts, donated $10,000 to the Methodist Church for use as building funds or for use in assisting students. Images represent documentation of student correspondence with the individuals responsible for administration of the funds. The five Board of Trustee members reviewed requests and recommendation letters for young men from colleges with religious training programs, such as Elon College, before High Point College was opened in 1924. Signatures from all trustees were needed for the release of funds and this was often done by board members signing their approval or denial of consent on a copy of the student's request letter.
