About this collection

Mae V. Kelly (1892-1986)

Mae V. Kelly, born July 29, 1892, and died August 4, 1986, at ninety-four years of age. Mae was born and raised in Tarrytown, NY. At a young age and without parental permission, she became Mrs. Edda Rieless in 1909 or 1910 (age 17 or 18). She had two children: a daughter in 1913 and a son in 1915. As the Roaring Twenties, or the Jazz Age, came into full swing, Mae was reported to be increasingly unhappy in her marriage. After dying her hair dark red, Mae endured a separation of unknown length and then received a divorce in 1925. At that time she began to “paint the town red” with Walter E. Mayer, and the couple eventually married in 1930. They remained together until their deaths. Mae's daughter, Dorothea, married James McQuade, also in 1930, after they were introduced by her mother and step-father. Mae's granddaughter, Marcia McQuade, born in 1935, is the owner of this collection. Mae Kelly was the great-grandmother of Molloy Rogers, the editor of this collection.
